Scorers: Brand 3, Bartlett, A.Norwood

Royal Holloway Old Boys beat last year’s League Cup runners-up AFC Spelthorne Sports 5-4 after a last minute, extra time winner from Adam Norwood.

The Old Boys took a two goal lead mid-way through the first half through Lawrie Brand. However, they then gave away a sloppy goal just before half time, and conceded an equaliser at the start of the second period.

The home side then regained the lead as Craig Bartlett bundled home from a corner after Keith headed against the post. However, then Spelthorne scored twice to take the lead 4-3 before Brand completed his hat-trick to bring the scores level once again. The last 20 or so minutes of the game were end to end with both teams exchanging blows but unable to find a goal.

A pulsating extra time followed and in the final minute as darkness fell the home side broke. Elliott Morsia was played in but fouled on the edge of the box and Adam Norwood stepped up to take the free kick. The Old Boys have hit a lot of free kicks into the wall this season  (Craig, Olly, Keith, Lawrie, Elliott, Harry etc) so Adam decided to do the same, however, the wall parted and the ball squeezed under the goalkeeper.

The win puts the Old Boys into the second round of the League Cup, where they will be at home to Tooting Bec.

Best wishes to Spelthorne for the season and Happy Christmas readers! 🎄
